Mine

Like shells, mines are fired from a tube or mortar.

A mine consists of a tubular, card casing with a lift charge at the bottom. There is a perforated card disk separating the lift charge from the 'body' of the mine which is packed with stars and/or effects. (Whistles, Hummers, Reports, Etc.)

When a mine is lit, the ignition fuse ignites the Pipe Match leader which carries the fire to the lift charge. The lift charge ignites, ejecting the stars/effects from the tube. This produces a 'wall of fire' effect up to a height of 150ft or so depending on the caliber of the mine.

Mines seem to be an underused effect in the UK and are particularly usefull for 'punctuating' music and disguising shells 'lifting'.
